Chapter 3: Full of Hope

MEMORABLE PASSAGE(S):
The setting sun painted the hillside and the hospital below, where the men were stretched out in their cots, row after row of them, like empty wine bottles. The blinded and mutilated pained him most. He could not find the right words to cheer them. He knew he sounded unconvincing if he told them they would recover. They may have expected nothing more than “How are you?” or “the sun is out today,” but Philipp felt that he disappointed them. After a while, he learned that just sitting quietly beside a wounded man comforted them both. Pg 48

SUMMARY:

Johann goes to participate in World War II. He didn't have many friends and still lived in Nuremberg. He spent most of his spare time with his family. Philipp is his only real friend. Johann remembers the painful memory of what happened to him and Philipp in 1922. Philipp was waiting for Johann at the Beer Garden, reading a book. Some students were sitting next to him drinking and singing. Philipp thought back to his drinking days six years prior. The war had made Philipp more serious and had changed him a lot, Philipp knew it too. Then he started thinking about the war. Philipp's squad went missing during the first world war after three nights of laying low with them, Philipp left the squad and signed on as a volunteer in a hospital. During the war Philipp was mostly surrounded by wounded men he spent much of his time taking care of them in the hospital. After the war ended, Philipp went to live with his family, but after a while he boarded a train to Berlin. When the train stopped, soldiers boarded. There were shells being fired every where. Philipp left the train, which turned around to Munich after he got off. When Philipp arrived, it was during the first night of the revolution. He slept under a bridge. In the morning, the fighting was over. He met a woman named Frau Grunberg and rented a bedroom from her. Philipp stayed in Berlin until December. He focused on his studies, worked at the hospital. He meets Johann in the Beer Garden to talk and drink. At this point, Johann has met Helga and is courting her. He and Philipp get into an argument over the uprising. Philipp wonders if Johann was part of the crowd that blamed the Jews for Germany's problems.
